Lenovo sent me the N5901 multimedia remote and keyboard for review the other week and I’ve been putting it through its paces the last few days. I had seen the launch photos just a few weeks ago, and it looked interesting then, but I had no idea that it was so tiny! It easily fits in one had, and the keys aren’t much bigger than on your smartphone. Of course, that has it’s up and downs but overall, I was grateful to get my old full size keyboard off of the coffee table. The remote is available now at Amazon for just about $60 shipped.
Check out my first impressions and review after the break, as well as tons of pictures.
The keyboard is intended for one handed operation and it achieves that quite well. The trackball is easily manipulated with your thumb, and the back of the keyboard is shaped to fit your hand. Key response is quite good for such a small keyboard, although you won’t be setting any speed records. Mouse tracking is good with the trackball, although I wish I could click by pushing the ball down like on my Blackberry. Instead, you’re forced to use the buttons on the top right and left. There are dedicated volume keys, as well as track controls (play, stop, pause, etc) – these are particularly useful for your HTPC.
Setup couldn’t have been easier. Just pull the tiny usb receiver out of it’s hiding spot in the battery compartment and plug it into an empty USB port. (it barely potrudes). Range was good enough for me not to have to worry about it at all. All in all, one of the best devices I’ve found for HTPC control. It’s available now at Amazon for $60 if you want to pick one up.
